Clinical Psychology

What is a clinical psychologist?

Clinical psychologists have extensive training and experience in assessing a range of psychological difficulties. They often develop a ‘psychological formulation’ (an understanding of the difficulties) which helps to inform which type of treatment approach may be appropriate. They are often trained in a number of talking therapies to help treat people’s presenting difficulties.

Psychologist vs. Psychiatrist, what is the difference?

Psychiatrists work with people with similar difficulties but the key difference is that they use scientific knowledge of medicine. Psychiatrists prescribe medication to people, whereas clinical psychologists do not. In many cases, a medical and psychological approach may be helpful in treating an individual’s difficulties.

What is CBT?

CBT stands for cognitive behaviour therapy. It has a good evidence base with people with difficulties such as anxiety and depression. It encourages the client to identify and challenge negative thoughts, which lead to certain emotions and behaviours.  The approach encourages the individual to face things they are worried about or avoid, such as going out socially. Generally you are expected to complete some ‘homework’ tasks in between sessions, to help face your difficulties and reach your goals.  It encourages a joint approach between therapist and client.

What can I expect?

In the first appointment you may be asked lots of questions, this is part of gathering information and ensuring a detailed assessment is completed. The assessment appointments will help to decide together what plan of action is most appropriate. You will have a chance to talk about what you would like from coming and what your goals are.

Will what I say be confidential?

All sessions are private and confidential. However it can be helpful to share information for example with a GP or family member, but permission would be sought from you before any action is taken.
