CSP - Sports Massage

Here at Central Somerset Physiotherapy we use massage therapy to help alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body's soft tissues during physical activity. Liz has a special interest in sport massage and is also a member of the Sports Massage Association (SMA).

Getting your sports massage from a Chartered Physiotherapist ensures you are in the best possible hands due to their advanced knowledge of biomechanics and tissue pathology.

Massage, applied skilfully, is the most effective therapy for releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the musculo-skeletal system. Received regularly this may help prevent injuries, which might otherwise be caused by overuse. A constant build-up of tension in the muscles from regular activity may lead to stresses on joints, ligaments, tendons, as well as the muscles themselves. The skilled massage therapist will be able to detect variations in the soft tissues and by using the correct techniques, help you maintain a much healthier physical state.

Many athletes use regular sports massage to prevent injury. Because massage can accelerate the body's own restorative function, you will be able to train harder and more often. The techniques used by our sports massage practitioners have been developed to ensure effective and efficient results are gained from each massage given.

The reported benefits of sports and remedial massage include:

  • Improved circulation & lymphatic flow
  • Assistance in the removal of metabolic waste
  • Sedation or stimulation of nerve endings
  • Improved muscle length
  • Remodelling of scar tissue
  • Assistance in mental preparation for sporting participation
  • Relaxation and reduction of stress

You do not need to be a sports performer to benefit from massage. Regular massage can also help relieve the stresses and strains of a hectic work schedule or busy social life.

CSP - Sports Injuries

Sports Physiotherapy is the specialised branch of physiotherapy which deals with injuries and issues related to sports people. A sports physiotherapist has sport-specific knowledge that can address acute, chronic and overuse injuries. Their services are available to sports men, women of all ages including children, engaged in sports at any level of competition.

Both Liz and Andy have a specialist interest in sporting injuries and are both members of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports and Exercise Medicine (ACPSEM)

We operate Corporate Schemes for many businesses, giving professional advice and recommendations across a range of situations and offer solutions to practical problems. Often supporting HR departments in prevention, identification and conformation of attributing factors. Our experienced team of physiotherapists can help companies reduce the cost of work-related musculoskeletal health problems.

Our physiotherapists work closely with occupational health departments and look at all aspects of an employees’ job using a biopsychosocial approach to achieving a swift return to work. With an average of less than 4 treatment sessions per referral, we get your employees’ back on their feet sooner than you think!

CSP - Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a health system that has existed and developed over thousands of years and involves the insertion of fine sterile needles (a painless procedure) into energy points along meridians in the body. Energy (Qi) flows through the body in meridians which connect tissues and organ systems. Health is present when these energies work in harmony with each other.

Acupuncture is an adjunct used by many physiotherapists as part of the management of pain, inflammation and as a means of enhancing the body's own healing chemicals in order to aid recovery and enhance rehabilitation.

The insertion of sterile needles into the body stimulates the brain and spinal cord to produce NATURAL pain relieving chemicals, such as endorphins; melatonin to promote sleep, and serotonin to promote well-being. These assist the body's healing process and offer pain relief as a precursor for the use of other treatment modalities.

Trigger point Acupuncture may also be used to facilitate relaxation in specific muscles following trauma such as whiplash injury or as a means to obtain increased muscle length. Here the needle is placed into the affected muscle until it is felt to relax under the needle and then removed.

All our physiotherapists who practice acupuncture are Members of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP). They are required to train to a minimum standard and are bound by professional codes of conduct through the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and Health Professions Council (HPC).

CSP - Rehabilitation

Physiotherapists play an important role in achieving  a full recovery after an operation or illness and are experienced in assessing what may be needed to improve well-being and enhance recovery.

Our experience within both the NHS and Private sectors means we have the contacts, should you require us to implement more specific specialist attention. Patient welfare always comes first. Full recovery requires the best possible care. Sometimes only short term assistance or advice is needed. Other times a scheduled programme of exercises may need to be implemented to give you the best possible chance of improvement and long lasting recovery.

CSP - Home Visits

We are flexible and understand that sometimes visiting a clinic can be difficult, cause for concern or stressful - which is where we can help with a pre-arranged home visit. One of our fully qualified practitioners can visit you in the comfort of your own home where they can discuss and treat you to the same high standard you would receive in one of our clinics. Not only does this allow them to assist you in the healing process, they may also be able to suggest changes you could make to your environment that would assist in your recovery and prevention of future incidents.

PLEASE NOTE: Home visits are subject to availability and location dependent.

CSP - Workstation

An increasing number of office workers suffer from work-related injuries such as neck and back pain or repetitive strain injury (RSI). Many of these painful conditions can be easily prevented, by simply paying some attention to the ergonomic environment that we work in.

Liz and Andy at Central Somerset Physiotherapy are members of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Occupational Health and Ergonomics (ACPOHE ) and are qualified to carry out detailed work station assessments for your employees, making sure their desks, chairs and equipment are positioned to minimise the risk of any workplace injuries.

We provide comprehensive reports on your office environment and we can recommend any extra equipment or treatments we think your staff might benefit from. It’s a small attention to detail that could provide an enormous boost to the morale and work output of you and your staff.
